The MSc in Medical Physics will provide you with a holistic academic preparation for a career as a Medical Physicist/Medical Physics Expert and/or Radiation Protection Officer/Radiation Protection Expert in the specialities of Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology (also known as Medical Imaging), Nuclear Medicine, Radiation Oncology (also known as Radiotherapy), Physiological Measurement and as a General Medical Physicist. It is also an excellent preparation for research in both academia and industry in the above specialties and medical devices and associated physical agents in general. The programme lasts for three semesters of full-time studies, with the summer semester being entirely dedicated to the research project. This programme was the first Masters in Medical Physics programme in Europe to follow the recommendations of the European Guidelines on the Medical Physics Expert project in the specialty areas associated with ionising radiation.

Applicants must be in possession of:

A Bachelor degree comprising 240 ECTS credits obtained with at least Second Class Honours in one of the following areas of study:

Science with Physics as a main area of study or
Physics, Medical Physics and Radiation Protection or
Radiography or
Electrical and Electronic Engineering or
Mechanical Engineering.

Applicants in possession of a first cycle degree in the above areas of study, comprising not less than 180 ECTS credits, may also be admitted to the Course subject to the successful completion of a Preparatory Programme.

During the first year of the Course, accepted students may be required to undergo an occupational health assessment so as to ascertain that they are fit for work which brings students in contact with the clinical environment. Students who do not fulfil this requirement may be barred from progressing with their studies. Failure to disclose information about a physical or mental health problem that could affect patient safety is considered to be a serious breach of the University Suitability to Practise Regulations.

*** Students who have NOT already taken an equivalent methodology study-unit, must register for HSC3002 as a supplementary study-unit. This study-unit will not be taken into account for the award of the final classification.

This programme of study is governed by the General Regulations for University Postgraduate Awards, 2021 and by the Bye-Laws for the award of Master of Science in Medical Physics under the auspices of the Faculty of Health Sciences.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

Identify a project and research objectives worthy of attention and which are realisable when provided with the necessary resources;
Embark on a traineeship to practice the Medical Physics profession responsibly within the legal and ethical boundaries of the profession;
Work in an inter-professional manner with other healthcare professionals, support staff and service users, their relatives and carers;
Integrate and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired during the programme to the realisation of the research objectives.
Embark on a traineeship to practice as a Medical Radiation Protection Expert responsibly within the legal and ethical boundaries of the profession.

Knowledge

Highly specialised knowledge in the field of Medical Physics which is expertise in the recognition and correction of less-than-optimal performance or clinical use of medical devices and the implementation and management of programmes for protection of patients/staff/public/research volunteers from physical agents associated with medical devices (e.g., ionising radiation, strong magnetic fields, lasers). All Medical Physics activities are based on current best evidence or own scientific research when the available evidence is not sufficient. Medical Physicists need to have a critical awareness of knowledge issues in the field and at the interface between physics and medicine.

Skills

Cognitive skills: specialised skills involved in problem solving, research, reflection, judgement, handling of complexity, communication and innovation.
Practical skills: involving manual dexterity in the use of methods, materials, tools and measuring instruments for medical physics applications.
Transferable skills: advanced analytical, synthetic, problem solving, mathematical, computing, management, communication, leadership, project management, creative and entrepreneurial skills.

Competences

Research: assume responsibility in an autonomous manner to;

Review a particular area of interest in Medical Physics.
Identify a project and research objectives worthy of attention and which are realizable given the available resources.
Integrate and apply the knowledge, understanding and skills acquired during the programme to the realisation of the research objectives.
Report and present the findings of the research in the manner specified by the Board of Studies of the programme.

Lay the foundations for the following competences;

Practice the Medical Physics profession responsibly within the legal and ethical boundaries of the profession.
Take on responsibility at a basic level for the role of Medical Physics Expert and Radiation Protection Expert (Medical) as required by EU legislation.
Be aware of the importance of maintaining fitness to practise in an autonomous yet responsible manner.
Be able to work in an inter-professional manner with other healthcare professionals, support staff and service users, their relatives and careers.
Take responsibility for recognition of less-than-optimal performance or clinical use of medical devices (identification and elimination of causes, and confirmation that proposed solutions have restored devices and use to acceptable status).
Take responsibility for the setting up and management of programmes for protection (including dosimetry) of patient/staff/public/research volunteers with respect to the effects of physical agents associated with medical devices (e.g., ionising radiation, strong magnetic fields, lasers).
Take responsibility for contributing to professional knowledge and practice and for reviewing the performance of teams.

As a graduate holding a Master of Science in Medical Physics, you will be able to enter a career, both locally and internationally (provided that the necessary requirements are met) as a clinical medical physicist in a health care setting. If you would like to further your knowledge, or are interested in contributing your own research to existing literature in the field, then you may choose to enrol in a doctorate programme, which will widen your career opportunities. You will be able to choose from becoming a researcher, an academic, a radiation safety officer, or as an employee in the medical device industry.
